The distinction from an AI engineer is straightforward: engineers build the systems, policy advisors decide the rules those systems have to work within. That means researching how AI is changing different industries, reviewing legislation, and advising decision makers on how to respond as the technology develops.

More than one route into AI policy

There is no single prescribed path into this profession. It is interdisciplinary, drawing graduates from technology, law, economics, public policy, political science, philosophy, and the social sciences. The strongest advisors tend to combine technical literacy with a real understanding of governance and regulation, so students should not feel boxed in by their current stream.

There is no single required stream. Students from Science, Humanities, and Social Sciences all find their way into AI policy.
  • Science (PCM/PCB): Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, and Economics build a strong technical foundation.
  • Social Sciences: Political Science, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, History, and Legal Studies sharpen analytical thinking and understanding of governance.
Several undergraduate routes lead into the field:
  • Public Policy: Public Policy, Public Administration, or Governance Studies.
  • Political Science and International Relations: A common base for national AI strategy and digital governance work.
  • Law: LLB, Technology Law, Cyber Law, or Data Protection Law, useful for advising on AI regulation directly.
  • Computer Science or AI: Technical graduates can move into policy after industry experience.
  • Economics: Helpful for understanding labour markets, innovation, and the economic impact of AI.
Many AI Policy Advisors deepen their expertise through a Master of Public Policy (MPP), Master of Public Administration (MPA), or postgraduate study in International Relations, Technology Policy, AI Governance, Law (LLM), Computer Science, or Data Science. A common and effective combination is a technical degree followed by a policy Master's, or a law degree followed by a Technology Policy qualification.
Short courses can strengthen a student's profile well before postgraduate study, particularly in AI Governance, Responsible AI, AI Ethics, Public Policy Analysis, Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, and Digital Regulation.
Activities that build a strong foundation include Model United Nations, debate, policy competitions, research projects, technology clubs, coding experience, public policy internships, student government, AI hackathons, and think tank internships.
